Wenger said that he would want all his transfer to be completed before the pre-season training starts. We would kick off our first per-season match this saturday, so are we gonna get the much needed defensive midfield partner for Cesc ?

Or does Wenger think that Song, Denilson and Diaby are good enough to compete for a starting eleven place? I am not sure what Wenger thinks, but from last season’s performance, if we are really going to challenge for the title instead of the fourth spot, then we definitely need an aggresive, hard-tackling central midfielder who is much better than Song, Denilson and Diaby. Out of the three, Song looks the most promising but he is still not good enough to be  a starting central midfield partner for Fabregas if we are really serious about being a title contender.

Transfer news

The season 2008-2009 ended with us empty-handed again. But now, we would just have to forget about the disappointment and looked forward to the new season.

We had managed to complete a new signing pretty quickly in the form of 23-year-old Ajax captain and centre back Thomas Vermaelen. Would he be the answer to our disorganized defence? I don’t know, since I have not seen much of him. I was actually hoping for an older and more experienced centre back, but I will reserve my judgement till the first 10 matches of the new season when I had a better look at this new signing. Nevertheless, credit to Arsene Wenger for making an early signing on an area where we were rather weak at.

From the various transfer rumours, we also seemed to be looking for a defensive central midfielder, which is a glaring weakness of our team last season since Flamini left. Candicates reported include Fiorentina’s Brazilian midfielder Felipe Melo, Marseille’s Albanian captain Lorik Cana, Stuttgart midfielder Thomas Hitzlsperger, and St. Etienne’s captain Blaise Matuidi.

Personally, I don’t quite like Thomas Hitzlsperger and don’t think he is good enough to be the first choice partner for Fabregas. Melo looked to be joining Juventus. I haven’t seen much of Lorik Cana except for some youtube clips, though he looked strong and aggressive (something we lacked), I have a feeling that Wenger don’t really rate him, or else he would have snap him up quickly. Blaise Matuidi is looking more and more likely, as he ticked most of the boxes of Wenger’s preference. He is young (22 year-old), french, and relatively cheap.  Though I would prefer to have a more experienced central midfielder besides Cesc, but if Matuidi comes cheap as rumoured I wouldn’t mind having him.

So far, none of the first team members left, and if things stay this way and we get a quality defensive central midfielder, we might well have a shot at the league title.
